Dear Subscriber First Name,I confess: I am a serial experimenter. But it turns out to be a much better “diagnosis” than my old belief that I was someone who could never stick with anything. I love trying new things—ways of eating, ways of working, even moving the sofa to the other side of the room. For a long time, though, I felt there was this unspoken expectation that I had to stick with whatever I started. If I moved the sofa back, it felt like admitting failure, like the whole thing had been a waste of time. But now, with my new diagnosis, I feel liberated: experimenters don’t have to keep up the experiment once the trial is over. That’s the whole point—we try, learn, and move on. Which brings me to my latest experiment: For the whole of January, I’m dealing with the newsletters I receive in one of two ways—respond or unsubscribe. Here’s how it works: first, all newsletters go into a folder. At least once a week, I go through the folder and decide either to: Why this experiment? Three reasons: To weed out the newsletters I don’t really value, so I have more time to enjoy the ones I do. To build the habit of seeing the people behind the newsletters as real individuals—people I could actually have a two-way connection with. To express more gratitude, especially to people I don’t meet in person. (This extends to authors and artists who inspire me—I’m planning to write more fan letters!)
The results after one week: I unsubscribed from most of the newsletters I was receiving because I couldn’t, hand on heart, really say I really valued them. Then I started writing to the ones I did appreciate. The responses so far have been mind blowing. One person asked if they could use what I wrote as a testimonial on their website. Two others both said I’d made their day. I tried to be specific and honest in my feedback. For example, with one sender, I admitted to not being interested in what she does specifically, but I love her emails because they’re so warm and funny. And here’s the unexpected part: in the same week, I received a surprising number of appreciative emails about my own newsletter, completely out of the blue. This whole appreciation, gratitude thing really works in a mysterious way. Why not try it? Even if it means unsubscribing to mine!
