Dear Subscriber First Name,You might find it a bit unusual that I’m planning a celebratory ritual for this weekend’s turning back of the clocks. After all, it’s an arbitrary event, rooted in nothing more than our strange human compulsion to divide our lives into hours and minutes! Yet, despite that, it always feels like a significant moment in the year. It’s as if we’re taking a sudden leap into winter. Here in Stockholm, the winters are long and often quite intense. This year, instead of dreading it or trying to resist the inevitable darkness, I’ve decided to lean into it starting with a little celebration. I’m planning a cosy meal, french onion soup from one of my favourite cookbooks, Butter: A Celebration where the onions take 3 hours to cook served at a table full of candles. Followed by a nap. Before that, we’ll take a long walk with a flask of hot chocolate and appreciate the last of the leaves hanging onto the trees. I’m also going to give my studio an autumn clean. There’s something about moving things around, creating space, and adding new energy to the environment. I might even attempt a bit of ikebana with branches gathered from outside, bringing a little autumn indoors. I’m going to relish this quiet, reflective time of year, rather than pushing against it. How will you be stepping into winter this year?
